Green-fingered gardeners and talented home produce enthusiasts turned out in force to help make this year's Burley Show a resounding success.

Around 500 visitors came along to the event which featured a total of 441 entries from 94 exhibitors.

Officials say the number of entries overall are up on last year, although the numbers in the junior classes were slightly lower.

The annual show, which is organised by the Burley Gardeners' Association, was held in the Queen's Hall on Sunday, and this year featured a new open class.

Publicity Secretary Mrs Sue Vint said: "This was the challenge that Joe Maiden set at last year's show.

"He challenged gardeners to grow a potato in a bucket. Many members entered this class and were staggered at how many potatoes had been produced."

Mrs Vint said that although junior classes were slightly down on last year, entries had included some beautiful miniature gardens.

She added: "The Burley in Bloom section was extended this year to include private gardens.

"This was well received and many gardeners entered. Framed certificates were presented for the four best gardens.

"A display of photographs showed all the gardens which had been entered and the judges had commented on the fantastic gardens in Burley and hoped more would be interested in entering next year.

"The Burley in Bloom Business Floral Display was also well supported, with more entries than last year.

"The village has looked very colourful all summer. And thanks were given to all who supported the competition."

Burley Oaks headteacher Roy Pallas, who presented the prizes and trophies, described the event as superb.

He congratulated all the winners and thanked everyone who had taken part, as well as those who had come to visit the event.

He said the people who had entered had achieved a level of excellence, driven by their own desire to do their very best.

Visitors were also treated to a wide range of displays, from groups including the Burley Art Club, the Burley Wildlife Reserve and Burley brownies.

Other demonstrations included toy making, holistic cosmetics and flower arranging.

Mrs Vint said 11 rosettes had been awarded for outstanding quality in all areas of the show.

She added: "As usual the auction at the end of the afternoon was very popular as most exhibitors donated their entries and the crowds were delighted to purchase all kinds of produce.

"The Committee of Burley Gardeners' Association is delighted the show has been another success and would like to thank all who took part, who helped in any way and those who visited."

Next year's show will be held on Sunday August 27.
