Ilkley Harriers

It was a quiet weekend of racing for Ilkley Harriers. At Saturday's Malham Show Fell Race, a short BOFRA race of 2.5 miles with 700 feet of climb from Malham to the top of Cawder Fell and back, Norman Bush was first Harrier.

He was followed by James Lind, then Paul Wood in about 25 minutes - all safely in the top half of the field.

Earlier, Emily Kerr was second girl in the Under-14 race.

The same day, Bob Hamilton ventured into Wales to run the Gyrn Gallop Fell Race (7m/1200 feet'), a little gem of an event held from a tiny village near Oswestry - a delightful out and back course on quiet lanes and grassy tracks in a stunningly beautiful part of the country.

Bob finished in 46.32 for a pleasing eighth place and first V45 in a field of about 80 runners.

On Wednesday, September 14, Ilkley Harriers are staging the Ilkley Incline. This is a road race with a difference - although only one mile in length, the mile in question is up Keighley Road from Wells Road towards Keighley Gate, so it includes 560 feet of climb - a real challenge. Entry is only £1.50, on the day only.

You must be over 16 years of age but other than that entry is open to anyone. The race starts at 7pm, come and have a go or join the spectators cheering on the runners!

Ilkley Harriers is a friendly running club, training from Ilkley Lawn Tennis and Squash Club every Tuesday at 7pm - more info on www.ilkleyharriers.org.uk

After a frustrating four weeks lay off due to a stress fracture in her foot, Horsforth's under-20 Great Britain international heptathlete Bethany Staniland was at last able to compete again at the weekend, if only in a limited capacity.

At the Tartan Games at the Gateshead International Stadium she was able to contest three throwing events in the senior women's age group. Here the 17 year-old Leeds City athlete picked up a hat-trick of trophies with third place in the discus, second in the shot and a victory in the javelin (600g) with a fairly pleasing distance of 35.46m.

Two days later, she was back in action at the annual Bank Holiday Monday Wally McLeish Memorial Open Meeting at Scunthorpe's Quibell Park Stadium. Another victory came here in the senior women's javelin and she also enjoyed a fine win in the shot (4kg) with an 11.58m putt, not far off her season's best of 11.80m.

Meanwhile, there was good end-of -season news for Bethany's 18 year-old brother Andrew as he learned that he had finished fourth in the senior men's long jump in the inaugural UK Athletics Challenge Series.

This has involved 18 top-level meetings throughout the year and points have been awarded for performance. Then the best three performance points have been totalled to give a merit table for each event.

Andrew, also a GB junior multi- eventer, as well as long jumper, achieved this fine position while still in the under-20 age group by winning the CAU Inter-Counties' Championships in Bedford with 7.70m, and with second places at the Loughborough Home International Match with 7.46m at and the North of England Senior Championships in Manchester with 7.45m.

Much of his experience at this level has come from representing Sale Harriers in the British Athletics League matches where he has won the long jump on all his three outings

Although both ill and injured since, like his sister, representing the GB under-20 decathlon team against Russia and France four weeks ago, Andrew was also able to begin competing again at the Gateshead Tartan Games, and though a little rusty, was able to come third in the senior men's javelin (800g) with 50.57m.
