A memorial score box has been built at a Bradford cricket club in honour of a gifted player who died during a match.

Club members and supporters have also raised £1,500 for the British Heart Foundation after Richard Smith, died from a heart attack in June 2003.

The 29-year-old, who was known as RD - his middle name was David - had scored 98 not out for Queensbury Cricket Club when he left the field complaining of chest pains and sickness. Richard, who also played rugby league for Queensbury, was later found collapsed on the clubhouse floor and pronounced dead in hospital.

The RD Score Box at the club in Old Guy Road will be officially unveiled on Sunday by David Normanton, president of the Folgate Trinity Insurance Halifax Cricket League, and club president Jim Shackleton.

The day will also feature a barbecue starting at 11am, followed by a match at 1.30pm.

Neil Myers, Queensbury Cricket Club secretary, said: "Following Richard's death, with the support of his wife Vicky, we began fundraising. We had a charity match on the ground and we also did a charity calendar with Queensbury Rugby League Club.

"We continued fundraising and involved local firms to help build the score box. All the bricks came from Marshalls and Persimmon Homes gave us the breeze blocks.

"We have also had support from Fairclough Homes and Banson Tool Hire and other local donations.

"Club members helped build it to keep costs down.

"It would have cost up to £20,000 without all this help."

First team captain Phil Sharples, a close friend of Richard and his wife Vicky, said: "It has been a hard two years without Richard.

"We have spent the time raising money and asking for favours to help construct the score box and now it has been done and is dedicated to Richard.

"We have finally achieved our goal and Vicky is over the moon with it.

"We all miss Richard greatly, he was well liked in the league and it is nice to leave something lasting for him."
