A devoted mother and grandmother from Shipley is dead and her husband is fighting for his life after a pile-up on the M62.

Susan Legg, 48, from West Royd Walk, was killed when a Fiat car driven by her husband Gordon, 50, was involved in a collision with a Subaru Impreza between junctions 33 and 34 near Ferrybridge.

The couple were on their way to the Scunthorpe area for a caravanning holiday when the crash happened at about 9.55pm on Friday.

Close friend and next-door neighbour Rachel Pollard said: "I'm still reeling from shock after this dreadful news.

"Susan was a lovely woman and they were a devoted couple who were popular with everybody. They both lived for their children and grand children.

"They own a caravan at Seven Lakes (in Crowle), which is ideal for Gordon because he is a fanatical fisherman, and that is where they were heading.

"We are all really worried about whether Gordon is going to pull through."

Mr Legg remains in a critical condition in hospital. He is known on the Aire Valley pub and club scene as the singer in the band Supernova.

The parents-of-three and grandparents-of-five were originally from Greengates but moved to the West Royd area of Shipley about 20 years ago.

Mrs Legg was a keen bingo player who often played at Idle Working Men's Club and she worked in the factory of Denso Marston, manufacturers of car radiators, on Otley Road in Baildon.

Mrs Pollard said: "They were a fun-loving couple who were great to be around.

"Gordon was not only a good singer but a great entertainer who could stir up the crowd.

"Susan had a very dry sense of humour and she always said exactly what she was thinking. She was quite blunt, but that was one of the things everyone liked about her. We were on holiday with them in Benidorm just four weeks ago and it was a laugh a minute," she added.

Family friend Tracey Tait, from West Royd Terrace, said: "They were a lovely couple who thought the world of their children.

"Many people around here are upset at what has happened."

l A 25-year-old man appeared at Leeds Magistrates on Monday charged with causing death by dangerous driving in connection with the collision. A 17-year-old has been released on bail pending further police inquiries.

Police are appealing for any information on the crash. Anyone who can help should call (01924) 294937.
