Taminder Gata-Aura is rapidly making a name for himself in the world of squash - and he is only 11.

The schoolboy from Wilsden is just back from the England Open Junior tournament in Sheffield where he competed in the under-13 section.

Taminder, who starts at Bingley Grammar School next month, plays his club squash for Pontefract and has been called up to play in Yorkshire inter-counties under-13 games.

He has already won numerous competitions for his age group including the West Yorkshire Graded, Leicestershire Open, Harrogate, North Leeds and West Yorkshire Open.

Taminder finished the season No 1 in the under-11s in Yorkshire.

He participated in the Inter-County Championships and the Northern Cup in the under-13s - aged just ten.

Both the Northern Cup and the Inter-Counties 2004-05 were won by Yorkshire.

His father Harjinder said: "Taminder has been playing squash since he was seven.

"He has always played at Wilsden but we took him for a trial at Pontefract where several top players, including Jamie Wilstrop, perform.

"He has been coached well from a very early age and his technique is very good. I play squash but not at that level. But I do practise with Taminder.

"Last year when he was ten he played for Yorkshire in the Inter-Counties and was playing against children older and bigger than himself in the under-13 section.

"We are hoping he will get England recognition at some stage. He has made the Yorkshire squad in his age group.

"He has been invited to Nottingham by England Squash, who only call on the top 16 players in the country.

"He gets coaching twice a week and plays every other day but I leave it to him as to when he wants to play.

"When he plays, he uses his head. He will play up and down the wall and coax a

bad shot out of an opponent during long rallies. His coaches tell him not to hit the ball too hard.

"Taminder is rubbing shoulders with England internationals at the Pontefract club and he is very keen to do well. Let's hope we have a future England champion here."

Taminder himself is keen to make it to the top of his sport.

"I want to be a professional squash player," he said. "I came eight out of 21 in the England Junior Championships last week and enjoyed that. And I'm told that I am one of the top 16 juniors in England invited to Nottingham so I am looking forward to that.

"I try to play six times a week and I train to build up my stamina. I even run around the block at home a lot."
