Two pub landlords have been hailed as "good neighbours" after rejecting the extended opening hours requested by their bosses.

At the Keighley and Shipley Licensing Panel meeting yesterday chairman Councillor Colin Gill said he "welcomed good neighbourly pubs" such as Haworth's Fleece Inn, whose landlord John Bladen rejected the extra half-hour openings called for by owners Timothy Taylor. Instead he asked to open the Main Street pub in Haworth an extra hour earlier on Sunday at 11am to meet the demand from tourists visiting the village, which was granted.

Speaking about extending closing times, Mr Bladen said: "The village has enough to put up with in extra tourists and we don't want to add to the disruption. This is a community pub for the community and I don't want to extend my opening times. When the owners were putting in the applications there was a lot of confusion - they were shooting blind so applied for hours they would and would not want and were looking to secure those extensions if they needed them."

The landlord of the Malt Shovel Hotel, in Northgate, Baildon, also reduced requests for extra opening hours made by Spirit Group from one hour to half an hour, which were granted.

Councillor Gill (Con, Bingley) said: "The hours requested (by Spirit) are extravagant.

"We have found in the past that the generic nature of applications tells us nothing about what individual licensees want. The object of this panel is to treat each case individually."

The effects on noise and anti-social behaviour were echoed by Councillor John Briggs (Lib Dem, Baildon) who was representing residents at the meeting. He said: "This is near the Angel pub and both have a significant outside area. It is located in the centre of Baildon where there are other pubs and the issue concerns us as this is a crime hot spot. Then there's the issue of noise, it is a residential area."

The panel also allowed the Bold Privateer Hotel, in Wrose Road, Baildon, to serve alcohol up to midnight on Thursday and 1am on Friday and Saturday and stay open an extra half hour.

Johnsons, in Brook Street, Ilkley, will open for an extra hour on Friday and Saturday but was refused a 5.30am closing for bank holidays and 9am closing for Christmas and New Year's Eve. The New Inn, in Otley Road, Baildon, was granted an extra 45 minutes opening after the sale of alcohol ceases, which is at midnight from Monday to Saturday and 11pm on Sunday.

Lloyds No 1, in Market Square, Shipley, was granted one hour of extra opening time until 3am Monday to Saturday.

All the applications are part of new licensing regulations which permit 24 hour opening for pubs and clubs.
