THIS year's Burnsall Feast Sports welcomed not one but two special visitors on Saturday.

The Duke of Devonshire's son, the Marquess of Hartington, attended and bravely took on the classic fell race.

He came a very respectable 41st out of 95 runners.

And Emmerdale fans flocked around Lorraine Chase, who plays Steph Stokes in the TV soap.

She had taken time out from her busy filming schedule to attend the show with her friend, Ilkley artist John Blakey.

She told the Herald: "I came to see the famous fell race and I am just enjoying the day. It is just like going back in time here, it is quintessentially English.

"Everyone looks like they are enjoying themselves and the children are loving Punch and Judy and their races."

Following tradition, show committee president Coun Chris Knowles-Fitton, accompanied by his daughter, climbed to the summit of Burnsall Fell at 7am to hoist the St George's flag.

Fortune was smiling on the event as the sun shone down throughout the day and families, including pet dogs, cooled down in the river Wharfe against the backdrop of picturesque Burnsall Bridge.

The classic fell race, where competitors race to the summit of the 1,350ft fell, was the highlight of the day.

Three-times winner Ian Holmes, whose father Jack started the race, was victorious in 13 minutes and 46 seconds. Ted Mason, of Wharfedale AC, was second, while Bingley Harriers member Rob Jebb clinched third place.

Sharon Taylor, also a member of Bingley Harriers, was the first woman home in 20 minutes and 46 seconds.

Children were entertained throughout the day with Punch and Judy shows, a bouncy castle, face painting and races. There was also a tombola and raffle.

This year also saw the return of the balloon race, which had been omitted from the show for a few years.
