Two key Bradford regeneration schemes have been shortlisted for prestigious construction awards to be announced next month.

The renewal of Little Germany and the refurbishment of hundreds of homes in Bradford 5 are among five West Yorkshire projects and 28 county schemes in the finals of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors' Pro Yorkshire awards.

The awards are given to mark "outstanding initiatives" which develop, regenerate or conserve the environment for local people.

The renovation of Little Germany, where 55 of the 88 buildings are listed, is in the finals of the regeneration category. Projects include developments such as the Millennium Gate and the transformation of the fire-damaged Eastbrook Hall into apartments.

Chief executive of Bradford Centre Regeneration Maud Marshall said: "This nomination for one of the property industry's most prestigious awards is a testament to the quality of the public realm improvement works currently being undertaken in Little Germany.

"The objective of the scheme is not to replicate the existing Victoria architecture in this historic area of the city but to enhance the current environment and to continue to consolidate the area's reputation as the city centre's premier residential location."

The Facelift Plus scheme run by Accent Regeneration in conjunction with Bradford Trident New Deal for Communities has been singled out by the judges as one of four finalists in the residential category.

The three-year £9 million scheme aims to refurbish the exteriors and interiors of about 500 terraced homes in Little Horton, Marshfields and West Bowling.

Russell Wilson, Accent's regeneration manager, said: "We're bringing together groups of properties which make a significant impact on Bradford. And having worked in this area for several years I'd challenge anybody to say they haven't improved."

RICS Yorkshire chairman Chris Johnstone said: "The Pro Yorkshire awards are all about celebrating the diversity of our region and recognising projects which have made a positive contribution to property, construction or the environment."
