A restaurant that fuses Indian and Middle Eastern food is the latest signing for Bradford city centre's £8.5 million Centenary Square complex.

The Masti Restaurant and Shisha lounge is due to open in September.

It will join the £1.8 million Lloyd's Bar, which opened at the complex in December last year.

Also on the way in September is a Chino Thai restaurant.

And another name is set to be announced within the next two weeks.

Negotiations are continuing and at a crucial stage but it is thought it could be a coffee bar.

If that is confirmed there will only be one upper-floor unit and one on the ground floor still empty.

The building, across from Grade I-listed City Hall, had been dogged by controversy. At one point it seemed to be struggling to attract any tenants at all.

Permission was sought at one point for shops to open there but this was opposed by other city centre traders.

Masti owner Syima Merali has taken a 25-year lease on the development.

His restaurant will serve dishes ranging from Indian street food to Middle Eastern mezze cooked in an open "theatre" kitchen.

He said: "We believe that Bradford, with its multi-cultural population and friendly atmosphere, fits the bill perfectly.

"We are looking forward to playing a key part in the regeneration of Bradford city centre.

"Masti is a unique concept. It means fun and mischievousness. The ethos is to provide a fun place in which family and friends can take time out and relax to the vibe of a funky, sociable atmosphere."

Councillor Margaret Eaton, the leader of Bradford City Council, said: "This scheme provides further evidence of the growing regeneration activity in the city centre and the confidence investors have in Bradford's future."

Ian Barraclough, managing director of the Centenary Square development's joint owners, St James Securities, said: "This is a tremendous vote of confidence in the Centenary Square scheme as well as in the city of Bradford itself."
