Police have made a fresh appeal for a casualty to come forward after he was hurt in a fight near a primary school, during which gunshots were heard.

A witness told how he saw a young man running from Scotchman Road, in Manningham, Bradford, with blood pouring from his stomach after hearing two shots being fired at about 11.30pm on Sunday.

Police confirmed at least one person reported hearing what he believed to be gunshots and said they attended after reports of large groups of Asian youths fighting, some of them armed with sticks.

Detective Inspector Noel Devine, of Bradford North CID, said their information was that someone appeared to have been injured, but they had not turned up at hospital.

He said: "We don't know how they were injured, but if they want to talk to us about what happened we would very much like to hear from them.

"We would also like to hear from anybody who knows someone who came home that night caked in blood."

The incident happened in a side street opposite Margaret McMillan Primary School. Witnesses said a group of about 30 young men gathered in the side street.

One resident said groups of young men met there regularly to deal in drugs during the night.

And a construction site worker told how youths sped up and down the road in flash cars at all times of day and night.

Superintendent Dave Oldroyd said he had not been made aware of such activities during the day, but did not rule out the incident on Sunday night could be drugs related.

He said: "Logic suggests it was something to do with drugs because no-one has come forward to say they were injured.

"What we have is people who have seen the disturbance and rung us, but nobody involved has come forward."

He said although there had been reports of gunshots, no guns had been seen.

A small amount of blood was found at the scene and sticks were recovered.

Supt Oldroyd said he had not been made aware of youths gathering in cars during the day but police would look into the suggestions and take action if it was necessary.

Det Insp Devine said officers were looking into all the accounts of what happened, but the information was confused.

He added: "Inquiries are ongoing to ascertain the full circumstances. If anyone has any information, please get in touch."

Anyone with information about the incident should contact Bradford North CID, via the help desk, on (01274) 376259.
