Coronation Street star Bryan Mosley is putting his weight behind a campaign to improve road safety near his Shipley home.

Mr Mosley, who plays Alf Roberts - the former mayor of Weatherfield - in the ratings-topping TV soap, has pledged his support to residents who are calling on Bradford Council to introduce road safety measures in busy Moorhead Lane.

Campaigners in the Moorhead Lane Action Group have handed a petition to Bradford Council urging that something is done.

And Mr Mosley, who lives in Nab Wood, said: "It's a serious matter and something needs to be done about it, otherwise there will be a terrible accident there.

"I was driving out of Ashfield Road the other day when someone whipped round the corner like Stirling Moss and missed me by a matter of inches.

"I've been coming out of that junction for nearly 30 years, although I avoid it whenever I can, and my grandson has to cross there virtually every day.

"It really is very dangerous and improvements are long overdue.

"I'd like to see at least a mirror so people coming out can see what's coming, and preferably some signs warning people to slow down.

"I've sent a letter to the residents and am happy to support them however I can.''

Action group member John Dewhirst said: "We're very grateful for his support and it's another person who shares our concerns about traffic volumes and speed on Moorhead Lane.''

Council officers have agreed to carry out surveys and look at preliminary measures to help combat the traffic problems after campaigners packed a neighbourhood forum.

The residents are worried about traffic speed and the lack of footpaths on some parts of Moorhead Lane. They claim that poor visibility for drivers turning out of Ashfield Road makes the junction dangerous.

Mr Dewhirst, of nearby Beechwood Avenue, said: "We carried out our own survey on the road and found that 950 vehicles travelled down it between 8am and 9am. In one 15-minute period, between 8.45 and 9am, a car came down every three seconds. That's a very frightening statistic.''

Shipley Councillor Tony Miller said: "The residents put forward their case very clearly and are being very realistic. Their aims are achievable and we will be looking at short-term measures to ease the problems.

Residents of Manor Lane also expressed concern about the volume and speed of traffic. They told councillors at the Shipley Central/Nab Wood Neighbourhood Forum that many cars used the road as a short cut to Asda.
