Bradford City manager Paul Jewell has called on his players to show a ruthless streak in front of goal when they play relegation-threatened Port Vale at Valley Parade tonight.

Since beating Reading 4-1 at home four weeks ago, City have scored only three goals in five matches and Jewell shared the fans' frustrations as the side hit woodwork three times in the second half during Saturday's 0-0 draw against Oxford.

Not surprising, finishing was top of the agenda at yesterday's training session and Jewell said: "We have been working on hitting the target. That is a basic requirement - if you don't hit the target you don't score.

"The first half performance against Oxford was not acceptable, but I have watched the second half on the video and we created some smashing chances.

"Peter Beagrie, John McGinlay and Nigel Pepper hit the woodwork and Edinho and Robbie Blake were one on one with the goalkeeper but didn't hit the target.

"Concentration is the key - but being a striker myself I know how difficult it is. We have got to be more ruthless in front of goal and show the killer instinct that has been missing."

After taking only four points from their last five matches, City must beat Port Vale if they are keep in touch with their play-off rivals - they are six points behind sixth placed Wolves.

But Vale produced the shock result in the First Division at the weekend by winning 1-0 at QPR.

City will be without winger Jamie Lawrence who had nine stitches in a wound just above the eye after being caught by Oxford right back Les Robinson.

Lawrence was replaced by Craig Ramage and, although, Jewell will not confirm his team until just before the kick-off it seems likely Ramage will be in the starting line-up.

Jewell who will choose from 15 players has added Dutch winger Dennis Sepp and goalkeeper Mark Prudhoe to the squad.
