A residents' leader has hit out at plans to build a 100-foot chimney at Allied Colloids.

The Low Moor-based chemical company has submitted proposals to Bradford Council to construct the stack alongside its research building.

If the proposals get the go-ahead, the chimney would be taller than the research building. Plans submitted to Bradford Council reveal the stack would have a steel exterior and be painted grey and blue.

Raw Nook Residents' Association Secretary Michael McTague said nearby householders would fight the plans.

"Many locals are employed by the company who feel reluctant to talk on this issue, but there are a great deal who don't and are willing to object," he said.

Mr McTague said Allied Colloids was a respected and important company in the area.

He said: "It has made efforts to improve its links with the community over the past few years.

"The company is not only good for locals, but it is great for Bradford and industry. But I am unhappy about these plans.

"We are happy for the company to develop but not on this scale."

But another resident, who asked not to be named, said another addition to the site would not cause any difficulties: "There are other tall buildings on the site," he said.

Agents for Allied Colloid, Nuttall Yarwood and Partners in Main Street, Burley-in-Wharfedale, Ilkley, declined to comment on the proposals.

The matter is due to be raised at Low Moor and Oakenshaw Community Centre, in Terry Road, tonight.

Allied Colloids Community Liaison Officer Peter Speight said current legislation required the chimney to be built.

"If the plans go ahead it will improve the environment to the community. It will be 100 feet from top to toe, but it will be shielded by surrounding buildings," he said.
