The mother of a boy who was left for dead after a hit-and-run accident today pledged to find the motorist who mowed down her son.

Roger Halliday, 11, is lucky to be alive after he was struck by a car and thrown into the air. Roger, who was on his way to a Boys Brigade meeting, suffered a broken ankle, cuts and bruises.

The driver failed to stop and was seen speeding away from the accident in Norman Lane, Eccleshill.

Roger's mother Pat said: "The person who has done this should be locked away.

"The doctors have told me he is lucky to be alive. I'm going to try and find witnesses by knocking on doors where Roger was knocked down."

Mrs Halliday, of Greenwood Avenue, Swain House, Bradford, said Roger, her only child, was still suffering from shock following the accident.

"He's very frightened about what the doctors are going to do next," she said.

"Roger could have been killed. I'm absolutely disgusted that the driver didn't stop."

Eccleshill police traffic officer Nick Emanuel said: "This was a particularly nasty incident. The driver left him for dead.

"A witness said he heard a screech of brakes then saw a car speed off.

"Another motorist came across him lying in the road, screaming."

PC Emanuel said Roger had been knocked into the air by the car.

He added they had little information about the driver of the car and urged any witnesses to get in touch.

He said: "His leg is in plaster and he's got cuts and bruises just about everywhere else.

"Doctors have said they are going to keep in for observation for a couple of days before they let him home with his mum."

Anyone who saw the accident, at 7pm on Monday, should call Eccleshill Road Traffic Police on Bradford 537447.
