A team of footballers are heading for a close shave in aid of charity after their manager's wife underwent an operation to remove a brain tumour.

Players with Stanbury Park Rangers are having their hair shaved to net cash for the Telegraph & Argus-backed Millennium Scanner Appeal.

The sponsored stunt, on Saturday night, is in honour of Pat Woodhurst, wife of their manager Simon.

Mrs Woodhurst, 45, from Stanbury, near Keighley, is going back to work part time in a doctors' surgery after successful surgery to remove the orange-size tumour.

Because Bradford Royal Infirmary does not yet have an MRI scanner, she had to go to Leeds to have the tumour diagnosed. She had to make five trips to St James's Hospital prior to her operation, which was carried out at Leeds Infirmary.

Grandmother Mrs Woodhurst said: "I had an initial scan in Bradford but I had to go to Leeds for an MRI scan to get a better view.

"It would be good to have something in Bradford rather than trailing to Leeds all the time.

"The team wanted to do something for charity and we were wondering what to do when the Millennium Scanner Appeal was suggested."

Husband Simon, whose team lies fourth in the Keighley Sunday Football Alliance League, thinks the lads will raise at least £1,000 in sponsorship.

The head shave will take place in the Friendly Inn, Stanbury, on Saturday night starting at 7pm.

One of the players' girlfriends, who is a hairdresser, and a colleague, will do the honours in what could be a lengthy operation.
