Work colleagues of a young dad who died from a suspected heart attack have organised a concert in aid of his family.

Players from Bradford Bulls and Bradford City are expected at the event in memory of Nigel Smith who was prop forward for Queensbury A rugby league team.

Mr Smith died in January after collapsing at Allied Colloids where he worked as a maintenance fitter. He was 29.

His widow Jannette, from Bankfoot, set up a trust fund in aid of their three children Rebekha, Bethany, three, and one-year-old Andrew.

Today she praised his workmates for organising the event which will boost the fund.

It will be held at the Pennington Midland Hotel in Bradford on Wednesday, April 1.

"It is a kind gesture. Since the tragedy I have begun to realise just how popular he was and how he helped so many people," she said.

Maintenance worker Graham Pickard helped set up the fund.

"I knew Nigel when he first joined after leaving school and he worked alongside me for some time," he said. ''When I heard the news of his death the first thing that struck me was his age - he was just so young.

"But he also has a young family and we all just wanted to help. I just hope loads of people come along to support this good cause."

Mr Smith, a keen sportsman, had just completed a night shift at the chemical plant and was chatting to colleagues when he collapsed.

The event will begin at 7pm and will feature comedian Johnnie Casson, The Muldoon Brothers and a disco.
