Adventurers Steve and Kath Jones head for a huge unexplored gully in Borneo this weekend.

On Sunday the Lothersdale couple join a 30-strong team which will attempt to descend 8,500 feet into Low's Gully in remote jungle. It is one of the world's great unexplored territories.

They plan to climb the 4,101m-high Mount Kinabalu, the highest mountain in south-east Asia. Low's Gully lies at its foot.

The gully - known as the 'Place of the Dead' - is the spot where a British Army expedition was lost for a month several years ago. The team was unprepared for the harshness of the terrain.

Over the past month Steve and Kath, of Wedding Fold, have been learning new rescue techniques on how to assist injured people up and down the ropes they will be using and what to do if any of the ropes should break or if a rope is dropped. Training sessions have taken place in the Yorkshire Dales and its caves.

Kath says: "We're getting more and more excited, but it won't feel completely real until we're actually on the aeroplane."

The couple have just received the specialised clothing they will be wearing, made out of breathable and waterproof fabric called Ventflex, supplied by Manchester-based Coverplus (Proofings), which is sponsoring the trip.
