Keighley and Craven cyclists are campaigning for a better deal for bicycle users.

Silsden resident Mike Shaw, who set up a small group of Sustrans Supporters last year, is exploring ways to develop cycle tracks in the area, improve safety for cyclists, and ensure cyclists' interests are taken into account in the planning of new road schemes.

Monthly meetings are held at a Cross Hills pub to discuss ways of encouraging increased local use of bicycles.

Ideas include promoting the development of a comprehensive network of cycle routes, promoting existing routes, representing the views of cyclists to planners and transport officers, and liaising with other similar interest groups.

Mike says: "The response to the original initiative to form a group has been encouraging and we have been able to network with many people who share our commitment to promoting cycling. But we need more volunteers if we are to achieve the backing and funding for realising our vision."

Since September group members have stimulated interest in the possibility of creating a new link in the National Cycle Network from Skipton to Colne along the disused railway line. The group has also been involved in the proposed West Yorkshire Cycle Route along the Aire Valley.

Meetings are held at the Old White Bear, Cross Hills, on the second Monday of every month at 8pm. Anyone wanting to join the group or for further information, contact Mike on 652516 or Stephen Kane on 634212.

Alternatively, anyone is welcome to just turn up at the meetings.
