Muslims and Christians together can make Keighley a good place or destroy it, the Right Rev David Smith, Bishop of Bradford, told a gathering at Keighley's new Sangat Centre in Marlborough Street.

Representatives of the police, probation service and many community and voluntary organisations joined in an event marking the Muslim festival of eid. Hundreds of people packed the premises to celebrate the end of Ramadan.

The Bishop said it was important for the future of Keighley that people learned to trust each other by meeting, listening to and getting to know each - across the boundaries of race, religion and culture.

"There is so much Christians and Muslims can do together for the good of the community," he said. "We are human beings, living on one planet. Together we can make a good place or destroy it."

Pir Abdul Ghafoor Ghaznavi, who has been Imam in Keig-hley for 30 years, spoke of the need for developing peace and harmony. He extended a hand of friendship to the bishop.

Sangat committee chairman Margaret Platts said the organisation had been growing into a substantial one, with many activities and more planned. She said the association had been through difficult times but it was stronger now.

as a result.

Miss Platts explained that a deal had been arranged with Bradford council to take over nearby Cater House for use as a community centre and said the Marlborough Street building was being used as a temporary measure.
