CRIMEFIGHTERS launched a campaign in Skipton this week to fund closed circuit television in the town.

Craven Crime Prevention Panel has drawn up a scheme under the name of Street Safe to cover the town centre and its main car parks - but the project can only proceed with the support of the community.

It is hoped the scheme will attract Government funding, but first the panel must demonstrate the initiative has the backing of local traders.

Craven District Council has already pledged £29,000, with a further £28,000 promised by North Yorkshire Police. The Government, it is hoped, will match that and local businesses are being approached for a donation towards the capital costs and, to set the ball rolling, the Craven Herald has agreed to give £300.

"This can only be a boon for businesses in Skipton, and I believe they should all contribute financially towards its success," said editor Ian Lockwood. "It will also make the streets safer for the general public."

There are eight cameras planned at strategic locations, which will complement other crime prevention initiatives such as Shopwatch and the ringaround system.

"We need to feel it is safe to walk in our streets, day or night," said panel chairman Janet Gott. "The safety angle is very important. The main crime issues in Skipton are shoplifting, petty crime, drugs, vandalism and general nuisance, and the introduction of closed circuit television will act as a firm deterrent. It has worked in other places.

"The Government has stated that this is definitely the last time that funds will be available for closed circuit television," added Mrs Gott. "This is our last chance, and we have got to be successful."

Residents and traders can attend an open evening at Skipton Town Hall on Tuesday March 3 from 5.30pm to 8.30pm.

And a lunchtime presentation for potential major sponsors is being hosted by the Hanover International Hotel at Snaygill on Monday March 9.
