Police are hunting for a hit-and-run driver who left one man dead and another seriously injured early today.

The friends were found lying in the road outside Bingley by a routine police patrol at about 2.30am.

Police said the dead man was aged 20 and lived in the Wilsden area. The other man, aged 19, of Thackley, Bradford, suffered serious head, leg and back injuries. He was taken to Airdeale General Hospital where his condition was described as stable.

Police said the pair, who have not been named, were walking towards Harden along a stretch of the B65429 known locally as The Twines. The accident happened about 200 yards before a turn off to Beckfoot. Bingley Police Inspector David Drucquer urged the driver to contact the police.

"The two were walking towards Harden when they were struck from behind by a vehicle travelling in the same direction.

"It appears to probably be a maroon coloured, British Leyland make of vehicle and it will have damage to the front passenger side with a broken headlight and a damaged wheel arch and wing.

"It is probable that there has been previous damage and repairs done to it.

"We are appealing for sightings of any vehicles of this description."

Insp Drucquer said they had been able to speak to the injured man and hoped to interview him again later today.

John Yeadon, chairman of Bingley Road Safety Committee, said: "There has always been problems on this road. The incident might urge the Council to think again about putting up signs and imposing speed limits.
