It was a day that started like any other for Bradford prostitute Caroline Creevy.

But Tuesday, October 29, 1996, was the day that sealed her fate in the most brutal and tragic manner.

The heroin she had smoked was wearing off and she spent most of the day sleeping it off. By the evening she needed more drugs to feed her habit.

The previous day, 25-year-old Caroline had spent the day with her prostitute friend Blondie and a customer. They had toured the Holme Wood estate in search of wraps of heroin.

Blondie left Caroline with the punter. It was the last time her friend would see her alive.

Valentine knew Caroline was "turkeying" - a term meaning suffering withdrawal symptoms - and he went out in search of some heroin.

By Tuesday teatime, Caroline had got the drugs she craved for. It was around 7pm that Valentine tried to force himself on her while she was resting on his bed.

She refused and started to fight back. During the desperate struggle, Blondie called for her friend and over the intercom system at Soho Mills heard Caroline screaming "help me, help me".

To stop her cries, Valentine battered her around her head then strangled her. He then went back into his living room and sat down planning how to dump Caroline's body, lying lifeless in his bedroom.

His plans seemingly began to form weeks earlier when he said to a friend that the nearby storm drains would be a good place to store stolen items. In his mind, Valentine knew it would also be a good place to store a body - Caroline's body.

He undressed the 25-year-old and at 1.10am on Wednesday was seen on security cameras leaving his flat with a holdall containing Caroline's clothes.

He returned 25 minutes later having dumped her clothing, which was never recovered, to dispose of her body.

Valentine knew about the security cameras at Soho Mills. He knew the body would have to be concealed as he walked out of the building.

A large patterned rug in his living room provided the ideal cover. At 3.51am on Wednesday, Valentine was seen leaving the building with the rug containing Caroline over his shoulder. Just 23 minutes later he returned.

When Valentine got back to his flat he would have done what he always did. He would have put on the television or some music, just like he did when prostitutes were having sex in his room.

The evil 43-year-old had committed a terrible murder. But he had no compassion, no feelings.

That night he slept in the bed in which he had just murdered Caroline Creevy.
