The head-teacher of Silsden's Hothfield Street School has praised the efforts of her staff and pupils following a very encouraging Ofsted report. Jamesine Welsh says: "I am very pleased with all the hard work done by the teachers and pupils. The report is a very fair reflection of the performance of the school."

Inspectors say Hothfield Street is a good school with many strengths and high-quality provision for its pupils. They also say the school exudes an atmosphere of warmth, friendliness, mutual respect and understanding.

Pupils of all abilities make sound or better progress in all subjects. Progress is good in English, mathematics, history, music and PE. Special educational needs is a strength. The overall quality of teaching is above that reported on average nationally. Teaching is satisfactory in 96 per cent of lessons and good or better in seven out of ten lessons. The teachers know how children learn and the management of pupils and high standards of discipline are a strength.

Planning is detailed and identifies clear learning objectives. All teachers keep good records and assessment is well used to inform future planning. The quality of the teaching promotes learning for all pupils and has a significant impact on the good progress.

There is a satisfactory range of extra curricular activities including sport and music. Good provision is made for the pupils' personal and social education and pupils are encouraged to develop a sense of personal responsibility. The staff provide good role models and moral and spiritual values are clearly upheld.
