A Bradford MP today warned that child killer Sydney Cooke would strike again, after he was smuggled out of jail under police guard.

Terry Rooney, MP for Bradford North, said: "A child will have to suffer again because the probation service is not sufficient supervision for this man."

He said he was speaking to Home Secretary, Jack Straw, about his serious concerns over the case.

Cooke, 70, and fellow paedophiles were part of a sex gang which raped and strangled teenage runaway Jason Swift. Cooke has admitted he may offend again and has agreed to be supervised by probation officers and wear an electronic tagging device.

Bradford South MP Gerry Sutcliffe said: "We have told the Home Secretary we fully back the idea of indeterminate sentences. But it is not about scapegoats -there must be a balance with the public being protected and people getting treatment. I think it is a tragedy that such an evil person can be loose on the streets.

Cooke, 70, had been moved out of Wandsworth jail in South London in preparation for his expected release today, after serving nine years of a 16-year sentence for manslaughter.

He was moved from the jail to an un-named secure institution on Saturday night to avoid any confrontation with protesters angry about his release.

Campaigners have continued their vigil outside Wandsworth Prison to demand new laws to prevent paedophiles like Cooke from being released at the end of their sentences.

Mr Straw says officials are looking at ways to keep paedophiles in jail until they no longer pose a threat to children.

Mr Straw today said he understood the concern over the release of child killer Sidney Cooke.

He also confirmed he was looking at new measures to detain dangerous paedophiles indefinitely after their first offence.
