New plans for a shopping complex at Haworth will be revealed to villagers this week.

Leeds developers Axis (Branwell) will display their proposals at Haworth Tourist Information Centre for a week from today.

Company representatives will be available at selected times and throughout Easter Tuesday to explain the details and listen to local views.

Earlier Axis plans for 14 shops in Rawdon Road were rejected by Keighley planning-sub-committee but councillors said they would look sympathetically at a more suitable scheme.

Now, following talks with residents, traders and other groups, the company's Paul Thelwell hopes the revised plan for a maximum 13 units will meet with their approval.

The height of the complex has been reduced to two storeys, 14 coach parking spaces are being provided, and public toilets and an automatic bank machine included. There will also be space for community facilities along with 35 car parking spaces, including several for disabled people.

Axis intends to buy the site from owner Ted Evans if planning permission is forthcoming. And Mr Thelwell says the company does not intend to operate what he calls "draconian parking control measures" and is happy to maintain existing arrangements for free parking for parents leaving and collecting children from school.

The plan still involves two buildings linked with a glass canopy and open walkways, but it is set further back from Rawdon Road. A new vehicle entrance is planned opposite Hartington Middle School and an exit further up the road. There will be a pedestrian access from Main Street.

"We have tried to take on board what councillors said," says Mr Thelwell, whose company has undertaken market research in other tourist areas like Keswick and Elgin.

He believes the scheme will revitalise Haworth and lead people from new businesses towards those already existing in the Main Street.

"The village should be the jewel in Bradford's crown," he says.
