Two luxury toilets are likely to be removed from Bradford city centre because they have become dens for drug takers.

Bradford led the way as one of the first cities to get the hi-tech superloos three years ago.

They were installed as part of the city's £4 million facelift and welcomed by public heads.

But now the Council will move the one outside Britannia House to Bingley town centre. The future of a second near Central House also hangs in the balance because of the problems.

A third, at Forster Square, is expected to stay but will be monitored closely by the Council

Today chairman of the Council's waste management sub-committee Councillor Gillian Whitfield said: "It is something which could not have been foreseen when they were installed.

"Syringes and other items are being found in them."

She said they were considering moving them into areas attracting large numbers of visitors where they would be regularly observed and where high quality toilets were needed.

The loos - which cost £40,000 each - have automatic doors, are self-cleaning and vandal-resistant.

But chairman of Bradford Retail Action Group Jeff Frankel said the superloos should stay.

"There has been no consultation with the City Centre Steering Group. They should talk to the people who use them."

City cleansing officer Alan Baff will tell councillors of the superloo problems in a report which proposes the demolition of seven redundant toilet blocks for health and safety reasons.

They are at Apperley Lane bus terminus, Greengates; Main Street, Bingley; Bingley Road, Saltaire; Bowling Park, East Bowling; Skipton Road, Utley, outside the cemetery; North Bierley Cemetery, Abb Scott Lane, Woodside; Wibsey Park, Wibsey Park Avenue, Wibsey.

Members will also be asked to consider redeveloping the block in Brook Street car park, Ilkley. Proposed improvements will include staffing for the block, which currently closes at 5pm.
