It's Safety Twice for Keighley-based O&K Escalators, which has been commended for a second time on its safety performance on London Underground's Jubilee Line Extension Project (JLE), due to open in April 1999.

O&K, the UK's leading escalator and autowalk manufacturer, continues to make progress on its record £52 million contract with London Underground to supply and install more than 100 escalators for the project, with over 250 people currently working on the site at any one time.

After receiving its first Safety Management Award Scheme commendation in August 1996, during the second cycle of the project, O&K has landed a repeat commendation for its contribution to safety during the fourth cycle.

Managing director Bob Chapman travelled to London to receive the second certificate from Dennis Tunnicliffe, managing director of London Underground Limited.

From the beginning, London Underground set out to make the JLE the safest construction project ever undertaken - so the natural choice was O&K.

An exceptional track record on safety has been maintained as the JLE scheme has progressed. Site activity calls for co-ordination and co-operation between all parties involved, including civil engineering, electrical and mechanical staff, various trades and other services.

Throughout the building programme, close inspections were carried out to ensure the highest standards of quality, performance and reliability. From the outset of the contract, each supplier had to submit documentation regarding safe work practices and safety method statements to them.
