There were no shocks in the Craven Cricket League's Wynn Cup Second Round on Sunday as all four matches went their predictable ways.

Last year's beaten finalists and favourites to take this year's trophy, Oakworth, entertained Second Division Skipton Church Institute and batting first the visitors posted 138-6, Shaun Williamson scoring a fine 74 and Ian Burke 24. In reply the Cure Hill side coasted to an impressive nine-wicket victory, Steve Hartley, 66 not out, leading the way ably assisted by Steve Lilley, 25, and Tim Brunskill, 24 not out.

Bradley were in good nick when they entertained Pendle Forest. Batting first they made a very creditable 188-5, Eddie Drake hitting 52 not out and Neil Andrews and John Williamson 30 apiece. The Fence side were always struggling, especially when Tim Rudden and James Heseltine were bowling in tandem, the two of them bowling unchanged for 25 overs and finishing with 4-29 and 4-26 respectively. Only opener Nick Swinbank with a gritty 46 held them at bay, being last out with the score on 100.

Cononley were just too good for Haworth West End down at the Coulthurst ground. Batting first the home side made 169-7 with a fit again Roger Nelson leading the way with 41 as Damian Bailey took 4-65. The Bronte side were always up against it and they could only manage 122 in reply, second teamer Dennis Palmer top scoring with 33 not out as Wayne Lee took 5-53 and Colin Stead 3-30.

The tie that was most likely to provide an upset turned out to be a damp squib. Sutton entertained Upper Wharfedale and put on a lacklustre display. Batting first they were devastated for 51, only Gary Williams, 13, and a patient Craig Thornton, 12, managing to reach double figures. Jonathan Smith took 3-0 in three overs and James Yeadon 3-17. Lacking both Chris Isherwood and David Holdsworth through injury the South Craveners were always going to struggle against a strong batting line-up.

The Dalesmen cruised to 48-0 and then had a slight hiccup as both openers were dismissed in successive balls, John Pearson for 24 and Kevin Holme for 16. The necessary runs were then a formality and the visitors ran out worthy winners by eight wickets.

The Third Round draw on Sunday, June 21, is: Cowling v Carleton; Long Lee v Cononley; Foulridge v Oakworth; Upper Wharfedale v Bradley.

This Sunday sees the Cowling Cup Second Round, the matches being: Skipton CI v Haworth WE; Long Lee v Pendle Forest; Upper Wharfedale v Thornton; Foulridge v Haworth.

The heavy rain last Thursday and Friday did nothing to help the condition of grounds on Saturday, but play was possible in all games with the bowlers on top in the majority and there were two ties as the two 100 per cent records left both fell by the wayside.

Oakworth maintained their position at the top of the First Division following a comprehensive win over visitors Upper Wharfedale.

The Dalesmen batted first and made 149 with Jon Slater scoring 45 and R Foster 42 as Jason Lockley took 3-27. In reply the leaders coasted to an eight-wicket win, Steve Hartley making 51, Michael Scarborough 39 not out and Tim Brunskill 30 not out.

The battle between the second and third-placed clubs, Carleton and Embsay, went the way of the latter. Batting first the Shires Lane side made a creditable 154-9 with Brian Hodgson top scoring with 61 and Chris Davies getting 43 as Peter Wrathmell took 4-62.

The villagers were coasting along at 50 without loss and then Stephen Speak finally got going and took 7-29 to help them out for 104. Steve Carling made 38 for the losers.

Embsay are now back in second place three points behind the leaders and two points ahead of Carleton. Foulridge are fourth on the same number of points as Carleton following their six-wicket win over at Cononley.

The home side made a modest 102 and M Choudry then made 64 as the Noyna side strolled to victory.

Bradley are fifth after they thumped visitors Cowling by nine wickets. Neil Andrews, 3-32, was the most successful bowler as Cowling made 133-8. He then scored 40 to go with Neil Robinson's 58 not out as the home side cruised to an easy victory.

This leaves Cowling anchored firmly at the bottom of the division.

Sutton struggled to 146-9 up at Haworth on a damp, slow wicket, P Williams making 43 and Gary Williams 36 as Mark Price took 4-70 and Richard Godden 3-24. The Bronte side rushed to a four-wicket win in only the 25th over, Colin Williamson making 52 not out as Jimmy McCormack took 5-59.

Gargrave are next to bottom following their 37-run defeat at home by Pendle Forest. The Fence side batted first and made 153, I Excell scoring 34 as T Buckle took 5-55. In reply the homesters were always struggling and they closed on 116 with Andrew Facey making 35 and David Humphries 26. Skipper John Hargreaves took 4-26 for the winners.
