A two-year-old girl was rushed to hospital under police escort after she was struck by a car being driven by her aunt.

Bryony Ledger is believed to have run behind the Vauxhall Carlton as her mother's sister reversed out of the drive at the girl's home in Highfield Crescent, Pudsey.

Bryony suffered abdominal, upper chest and neck injuries and was taken by ambulance to Leeds Infirmary under police escort. Her condition was described as poorly but stable.

It is understood her parents are keeping a vigil at her bedside.

The accident happened at around 1.30pm yesterday just after the car, understood to be carrying two adults and three children, pulled into the drive.

A police spokesman said: "Some of them got out and the little girl, the niece of the lady driving, ran at the back of the car as it was reversing.

"The girl suffered serious injuries after being involved in the collision and an investigation into the incident has been launched."

A neighbour said: "I was standing at the back door when I saw the car pull in like it does nearly every day. I saw the little girl run out the back of the car and I heard a bang." She added: "It's a terrible accident. The mum is very caring and loves the girl and her brother. They are lovely people.

"The little girl usually does as she's told. That's just kids. One moment they're there and the next, they've vanished."

Another neighbour said: "They are a nice family and worship their daughter."
