Bradford City are increasingly confident of signing Rangers right back Stephen Wright.

The T&A understands that City are very optimistic of completing the move for the 26-year-old former Scotland Under-21 international, who is available on a free transfer under the Bosman ruling, in the next few days.

Scottish clubs Hearts and Dundee United are also reported to be keen to sign Wright who had a spell on loan in England with First Division Wolves at the end of last season.

Wright, who cost Rangers £1.5 million when they signed him from Aberdeen three years ago, is out of contract at Ibrox.

He is expected to be one of a number of players to leave the club as coach Dick Advocaat starts a new era at Rangers.

He made his debut for Aberdeen in 1990 and went on to play 147 league matches for them.

Wright was a member of the Aberdeen side who lost against Rangers in the Skol Cup and Scottish Cup finals in 1993. He also played in the UEFA Cup for them.

He is a former team-mate of City's new signing Stuart McCall who earlier this month became Jewell's first close-season capture.

Signing a new right back is a priority for Jewell as he prepares for the new season.

Since Chris Wilder left to join Sheffield United for £150,000 on transfer deadline day in March, City have been without a player of first team experience in that slot.

Jewell signed Scott McAnespie on loan from Fulham to fill the gap, but McAnespie failed to impress and has now returned to his club.

City players returned for pre-season training today and will spend a few days at an army camp at Chester next week as part of their preparation for the new campaign.
