World motorcycle trials champion Dougie Lampkin topped the tables over the weekend in France, where he won both qualifying events in the sixth round of the world series.

Lampkin finished ahead of Graham Jarvis and former champion Marc Colomer at Virleu Le Grand, near Lyon.

Conditions were hot for the competitors, who toiled in blazing sunshine with temperatures soaring well above 30 degrees centigrade.

Lampkin thought the woodland course was easy in places, but the champion from Silsden was annoyed that he lapsed on the 11th and 15th sections on Saturday, losing ten marks. Jarvis thought some sections were tricky, but Steve Colley was not happy with his performance.

Jarvis failed to maintain his Saturday form and slumped to 11th, but Colley climbed to eighth, bettering his Saturday performance. Jarvis remains third and Colley sixth.

Martin Crosswaite rode well, but his 'minder' Russell Houghton from Bangor, Ulster, was hospitalised on Saturday night with a mysterious virus. That distraction didn't help the Bingley youth, but he did climb to 21st on Sunday after 27th on day one.

Lampkin now leads by 67 points with just three rounds to run. There are a maximum of 120 points still available so the title will not be resolved until at least the Andorra round next weekend, where another double victory will more or less settle the title in favour of Lampkin.

Dewsbury motor-cycle hill climber John Woods set the fastest time of the day at the Baitings Dam climb at Ripponden during the Batley Motor Cycle Club meeting.

Shipley 250cc rider Ian Escrie took third spot on his Aprilia in his class, Woods was riding a Honda machine in the unlimited category.

Ilkley's James Hanson (Lewis Motor-sport) finished ninth in the eighth round of the Formula Vauxhall Junior Championship at Croft.

The youngster was involved in a great battle in the latter part of the race with Class B winner Gary Paffett (Team Young Guns) of Hoddesdon, Herts, who finished two-tenths of a second ahead.

However, the pair cannot be separated in the overall standings - they are eighth equal with 23 points at the halfway stage.

Hanson was on the grass at the start and fell from ninth to 14th. The rain helped his cause, but he lost time near the end because his car was not set up properly.

Keighley's Bobby Fryers head the scoring after the June round of the of the BARC Harewood Speed Hillclimb Championship.

His 15.32 in his Clio Williams took him ahead of 11 contenders, including Settle's Jonathan Mounsey (Sapphire RS Cosworth) and Bradford's David Sturdy (Van Diemen RF 86).
