A DISABLED driver had a lucky escape when her car left a moor road and careered 60 feet down a steep hill in Ilkley.

Fortunately, the Suzuki Vitara's progress was halted by a tree stump, leaving the 70-year-old driver suffering from only shock and minor injuries.

The accident happened close to the Cow and Calf rocks on Hangingstone Road, Ben Rhydding, and firefighters performed a delicate one-and-a-half operation to rescue the woman, using a basket stretcher, before she was taken to Airedale General Hospital, Steeton, near Keighley.

Before the woman could be released from the jeep it had to be secured using winching equipment to prevent it running down the whole length of the hill into houses below.

"This isn't the first time a car has gone off the road like this and it is getting too close for comfort," said Patricia Graham, who lives about 200 yards from the accident scene in Undercliffe Rise.

Inspector Alison Bennett, of Ilkley police, said the woman, whom the police have not named although she is believed to live in Silsden, was lucky to be alive.

She said five teenagers who saw the accident immediately went to help and one used a mobile phone to call the emergency services.

"The five lads reacted well and should be praised for their quick actions," said Insp Bennett.
