Window cleaner Brian Barraclough believes Divine intervention played a big part in his first-ever hole in one on Friday.

Brian, a 16 handicapper, was playing in the charity tournament he helped organise at Keighley in memory of his best friend Danny McGowan when he holed out at the par-three second.

"I told everyone I hit a perfect six iron with a bit of draw, but really it was missing by a mile until it hit the top of the tree in front of the green," said Brian.

"Two of us were on the green, but we could only see one ball. I looked in the hole and saw Danny's little bald head!

"I have been playing golf for 27 years and never even been near a hole in one before. If I was ever going to get one it couldn't have happened on a better day. Danny would have loved it!"

Brian and Danny, who died in January, had been friends for over 30 years, and used to play cricket together for Morton Banks CC.

The Danny McGowan Memorial Golf Day raised around £6,000 for Manorlands on the day, and the organisers hope an event tonight with a grand draw and auction will take that to around £8,000.

Fifty teams from around the country, from as far away as Devon, took part in the golf day.

Winners were Keighley Golf Club professional Mike Bradley, Lee Holmes, Russell Newton and Stuart Flanagan with 120 points. Second were Steve Murray, Pat Murray, David Smith and Terry Bowler on 118, third Keith Jowitt, Simon Jowitt, Lindy Jowitt and Colin Bottomley (116) and fourth Ricky Cromwell, Phil Toon, Billy Wright and Dave McGee (114). Nearest the pin on the eighth was Malcolm Smith, and on the 14th Tony Green. Mike Bradley had the men's longest drive and Barbara Marklew the ladies'.

Silsden Golf Club's Scratch team members were celebrating at the weekend after taking the club into the Bradford Union's first division for the first time.

Silsden's 6-2 home win over Ghyll on Friday was good enough to see them promoted, while nearest rivals Bradford could only draw 4-4 with Bradford Moor. Northcliffe finished as second division champions, five points clear despite going down 5-3 at South Bradford in their final match.

Keighley finished safely in the first division, 13 points behind champions Baildon but 10 clear of relegated Bingley St Ives and 19 points ahead of bottom club Skipton.

Branshaw held on to their third division spot thanks to relegated Riddlesden - whose 4-4 half with Headley consigned the Bradford club to division four next year.
