Match report: Widnes Vikings 6, Keighley Cougars 30.

A solid second half performance by Cougars saw them run in four tries to make sure of the points in this bottom half of the table battle.

The highlight of the second half was a hat-trick for Welsh winger Jason Lee, but Keighley coach Lee Crooks was far from happy with his team's performance, particularly in the first half, saying: "I was disappointed with the way we played, but we at least accomplished what we set out to do - win.

"In the second half we picked up our commitment and intensity as we worked the ball to areas that we have planned for, and I thought our support play at times was spot-on.

"However, we are still making too many basic errors. If we had played against a good side then we would have had our backsides kicked.

"Some of the errors we made were just schoolboy stuff. Too many players do just what they want to do, rather than what I want - and that will change."

The first half was best summed up in one word - dire. There were 31 stoppages from penalties or handling errors, and it looked like a game between sides struggling at the wrong end of the First Division.

Skipper Jason Ramshaw gave Keighley a great start when he bagged the only try of the half, taking a neat inside pass from Mark Campbell to scramble over in the tenth minute.

Jamie Benn converted, then added a penalty on the stroke of half-time. All Widnes could manage was a Mark Hewitt penalty.

Jason Laurence grabbed Keighley's second try in the 46th minute, going in after Christian Tyrer collected a loose ball, and dummied his way through the defence, Benn converting.

From then on in it was the Lee show. Alex Smits set up field position for Lee to race in off his wing for his first on the hour.

Ten minutes later Benn collected a Widnes kick and raced 60 metres upfield before putting Lee over at the corner.

Then with just five minutes left, Lee completed his hat-trick by going over from acting half after a strong run by Fred Sapatu.

Widnes did have a late flourish, centre Marty Moore going over with just two minutes left, but it was scant consolation for this once-great club.
