Bradford's three MPs were today pressing for first-aid training for bus drivers following the death of a youngster from an asthma attack.

Matthew Douglas, 14, collapsed on a bus at Holme Wood, Bradford, on his way home.

The bus radio was out of order but the driver was able to call for an ambulance because he was passing a telephone box.

Passenger Alan Copley took further advice from ambulance staff in the telephone box and he and the driver desperately tried to save Matthew's life.

After the tragedy. trade union official Mohammed Taj told the Telegraph & Argus he was pressing for an inquiry into the out-of-order radio and wanted first-aid training for bus drivers.

First Bradford Traveller began a full investigation but Mr Taj - branch secretary of the Tran-sport and General Workers Union - was sent home pending a disciplinary hearing. His union says he has suspended but the company says he has been removed from duty as a precaution. The company says it is not disciplinary action. But the union says Mr Taj - a bus driver for 28 years - has been asked to attend a disciplinary meeting today with the company.

First Bradford has pointed out that there are stringent rules and regulations relating to employee communication with the Press.

Now MPs Gerry Sutcliffe, Terry Rooney and Marsha Singh are contacting the company and West Yorkshire Passenger Tran-sport Authority backing the call for first-aid training.

A First Bradford spokesman said: "First Bradford are the only local bus operator and one of the few in the country fitting radios in vehicles. The radio of the vehicle concerned on Sunday night had been inspected and necessary parts ordered."

The spokesman said a maintenance team carried out inspections of the buses every evening and reported any faults.

On the first aid issue the spokesman said: "At present there are nominated members of staff who are first aid trained. We are examining the legislation regarding first aid training and liability."
