The Keighley branch of environmental pressure group Friends of the Earth is to be relaunched next month.

The group, which campaigns on local and worldwide issues, plans to make its meetings more informal. Gatherings held on the second Tuesday of each month will adopt a laid-back discussion-type format.

Co-ordinator Jane Howie has invited members of the national Friends of the Earth organisation, as well as other concerned local people, to the relaunch. People can air their views during the meeting on Tuesday, September 8, (7.30pm) at 1 Devonshire Street, under Keighley Playhouse.

Jane says: "If you are concerned about the future of our children and would like to help create a world that is sustainable, please find time to attend."

Friends of the Earth is currently campaigning on local issues including the proposed Bingley bypass, and plans to build houses in East Morton and Long Lee.

The group's latest newsletter criticises the recent government go-ahead for the Bingley relief road, which will pass through a Site of Special Scientific Interest. The leaflet also reveals Friends of the Earth will step up its campaigning on housing issues.

Members are concerned that local people, such as residents of Long Lee, are not given enough chance to participate in local housing plans.

The newsletter praises Keighley firm Triplex for making major environmental improvements to its Dalton Lane foundry, as reported recently in the Keighley News.

A spokesman says: "We welcome the better atmosphere around Triplex. They say the upgrade is actually good for business."
