The first steps have been taken to construct an impressive multi-thousand pound boathouse in Lister Park.

The building is part of a £4.2 million improvement scheme to restore the popular park to its former Victorian splendour.

Beradford Council's Recreation Division has submitted a planning application for the structure, which includes a viewing gallery for the public.

The £300,000 building will also include a ticket office, workshops and exhibition area.

The old toilet block at the Oak Lane entrance will also be demolished and replaced with a superloo.

The park lake was drained in March on the advice of the Environment Agency because it was the best time to remove the fish before they spawned.

Now a full survey has been carried out on the lake basin, boundary wall, gates, steps and railings. A derelict greenhouse at the side of Cartwright Hall has been demolished and both park lodges have been restored.

Design work has also started on the Indian-inspired Mughal water garden, bandstand and play area.

The garden which will cost £434,000 will be developed on a hardstanding next to Cartwright Hall. The Council says it will reflect the cultural diversity of the area and create a link with the cultural exhibits in the hall.

The Grade II listed park is being restored with the help of a £3.2 million Heritage Lottery grant.
