Bradford City boss Paul Jewell believes lapses in concentration are costing his side dear this season.

The defensive errors mean that Bantams travel to West Brom on Sunday in 21st position after an indifferent start to their league campaign which has yielded just one win in seven games.

City have impressed going forward in the majority of these outings but at the back it has been a different story.

They have yet to keep a clean sheet in the First Division after conceding 13 goals in just seven outings and only four sides - Bristol City, Oxford, Swindon and Sheffield United have worse records.

Jewell was also disappointed with the goal City conceded in the 2-1 Worthington Cup second round first leg win at Halifax on Tuesday and says the situation must improve if his side are to start climbing the league table.

"A lot of the goals have been as a result of us losing our concentration and that has to be a real area for concern.

"Every player has a job to do when we are defending but some are not doing this.

"We told the players before Tuesday's game that Halifax often take a short corner to the right back before he crosses the ball.

"That happened for their goal and the full back was not closed down as he should have been. "We also went to sleep against Sheffield United on Saturday and it is a major concern.

"As always we will work as hard as we can to sort this out on the training field. There is no point defending well for 85 minutes and then going to sleep. It is a case of drumming this in and the players must learn very quickly."

The City boss was, however, pleased to come away with a lead from The Shay to take into next Tuesday's return leg at Valley Parade and hopes it will help instil confidence in his side.

"We were on a hiding to nothing at the Shay. Since the summer there seems to be a lot of people hoping we fail. It seems to be a case of 'Bradford City have spent all this money so let's hope they fail'. We have to ensure this does not happen."

Meanwhile, the City boss allayed fears that Gary Walsh may have been injured in Tuesday night's victory at the Shay. The Bantams goalkeeper appeared to be struggling with an ankle injury but Jewell said: "He is OK."
