Police were called to a Bradford school when a naked man was seen in the playground.

The incident happened at about 2pm yesterday at Woodside Middle School when the man was spotted taking his clothes off by staff watching security monitors.

But the headmaster of the Buttershaw school, Mr Eric Sykes said the security prevented the man from getting into the premises. Mr Sykes said: "Staff in the school office spotted the man on the monitors and immediately called the police.

"He tried ringing the buzzer of the nursery school but staff called the police and within minutes they arrived and he was arrested."

"It was a real shock but fortunately all of the pupils were in lessons at the time and didn't see anything.

"We're as secure as we can be at Woodside. All the doors have automatic locks and visitors can be seen from a monitor and have to buzz to get in.

"There's also a high fence around the nursery school playground which makes it difficult for people to get in.

"It was certainly an unusual incident."

PC Jude Roberts, of Odsal police, said: "We received a call to say that a man, who we believe was under the influence of drugs, was running naked around Woodside.

"Officers attended the scene and found him in the school playground and he was arrested."

A programme has started this month by Bradford Council's pioneering School Security Team to help schools across the district tighten security and increase safety awareness among staff and pupils.

More than 40 per cent of the district's schools have already received information about improving security.

A man was today being questioned at Odsal police station about yesterday's incident.
