A pub which was the scene of a bloody murder is set to reopen after a massive multi-thousand pound refit.

In April 1995 two masked men burst into the Raggalds Inn, in the Mountain area of Queensbury, and at point-black range shot customer Michael Briggs dead.

Landlord David Baines and a second customer were also wounded in the attack.

For months afterwards the pub was linked to the murder trial which followed.

Two Queensbury men - Morgan Duffy and John Spalding - were jailed for life.

But the pub's gruesome past did not deter imaginative Bradford builder Chris Delaney, who bought the premises at the end of last year and promised to spend £500,000 on refurbishing it.

Workmen have been on the site since March and the pub is scheduled to reopen within two weeks, providing 25 jobs locally.

Jenny Delaney, Chris's wife, said: "A lot of money has been spent on it. All it needed was a bit of tender loving care."

And the old pub, once the haunt of celebrities during the Second World War, seems to be heading back to its glamorous old days.

The older part of the building is now a games room. Other changes include a copper ceiling, a mirrored bar, new toilet block, patio and extended car park. An old barn has been turned into the main kitchen.

A new function suite features a large arched window framing the spectacular view down the valley beyond the pub. One of the windows spells the name Raggalds. "When the sun shines it throws the word Raggalds on to the floor," said Jenny.

She declined to say exactly how much cash had been spent on the work, but when it came before Bradford Council for planning permission Mr Delaney promised to spend at least half a million pounds on its refurbishment.
