Police have set up a confidential hotline for people to report drink drivers over the Christmas period.

Keighley police division launched its anti-drink drive campaign this week.

And special 24-hour lines have been set up for the public to turn in drivers they believe are over the limit.

Head of Keighley traffic police Sergeant Richard Czornowol said: "The message is simple - do not drink or use drugs and drive. It is dangerous and could result in loss of life. If you intend to drink leave your car at home."

Sgt Czornowol said police patrols have also been stepped up and will last until the end of the holiday period on January 3.

Officers will be on the look out for drivers going home after office parties or after a dinner time session at the pub. Those caught face a heavy fine, imprisonment and a lengthy driving ban.

Anyone involved in a traffic accident over the Christmas period can also expect to be tested for alcohol levels.

He said too many people failed to heed the warning last Christmas, when a hotline was also set up. Of 173 motorists stopped in Keighley division, seven failed the breath test. Each driver was at least twice the legal limit and one was four times the legal alcohol limit. Similar schemes have operated in Wharfedale, Aireborough and the Bradford area.

The confidential drink/drugs line can be called anytime on (01535) 617074 or 0831 667227.
