A police chief in charge of the John Nutter murder inquiry today urged people to "shop" the killers.

Detective Superintendent Stuart Hyde said he believes someone knows who is responsible for the murder of the 68-year-old pensioner and is covering for them, either through misguided loyalty or fear for their own safety.

Mr Nutter, of Woodhall Park Crescent West, Pudsey, died after three masked raiders burst into his home on Monday, July 20.

Mr Nutter and his sister-in-law Mary Skilton, 56, were both sprayed in the face with an incapacitant. He was beaten to the floor and Mrs Skilton was also attacked, leaving her with a head wound which needed 12 stitches.

It is believed Mr Nutter died of shock, although a post-mortem examination failed to establish an exact cause.

Stolen in the robbery were two steel Rolex watches. Detectives believe the gang responsible has strong links with the West Bowling area of Bradford. The car used in the robbery was recovered in Birklea Street.

Det Supt Hyde said the murder hunt was still fully staffed with officers, who have dealt with more than 300 statements and spoken to more than 1,000 people.

He said: "We feel that there are some people out there who have not come forward with information through misplaced loyalty or fear of reprisals.

"My appeal is for them to get on the telephone and speak to us.

"I feel someone can give us some evidence that would allow us to proceed to court."
