Guiseley 0

WHITBY TOWN 3

GUISELEY gave a dismal showing against an impressive Whitby side on Tuesday night which sent the Nethermoor faithful home in despondent mood.

On this showing Guiseley's games in hand will be of little use to them and manager Bobby Davison must quickly get his troops back into the form which has taken them to the higher echelons of the UniBond Premier Division this season.

The first chance to do that comes on Saturday but it will be a tough task as they visit high flying Winsford United.

Guiseley were simply not in the game against Whitby from start to finish. They could not even put away a penalty - Simon Parke being the villain this time.

Although Guiseley welcomed back skipper Des Hazel from his international exploits with St Kitts they were without midfielder Stewart Airdrie (injured) and late flu victim James Nettleton as well as longer term injury victims Peter Atkinson, Simon Trevitt and Neil Parsley.

This meant something of a re-shuffle before kick-off and Guiseley never seemed to settle.

Full-back David Logan gave Whitby the lead with a cracking shot and it was extended to 2-0 just before the break when Nick Peverell netted.

Guiseley forced a couple of corners early in the second-half but they were merely chasing shadows and apart from the continuous efforts of midfielder Andy Williams to inject some semblance of order into their play and the constant battling of experienced left-back Colin Hogarth Guiseley had little to offer.

It seemed a little harsh when Whitby were awarded a penalty when Andrew Toman ran at Matt Daly and fell over with the big defender getting a booking.

Logan made no mistake with the spot kickbut when Whitby were awarded another he hit his effort against the bar.

Guiseley were given a chance to pull a goal back when Parke was upended by 'keeper Gavin Kelly - who was shown the yellow card - but it summed up their night when Parke drove the spot kick wide.

All Guiseley really had to show in this half were a couple of tame long range efforts from Parke and substitute Mick Morrell.

Guiseley did get the ball in the net but Daly had helped it on its way with an elbiow and the effort was ruled out.

HARROGATE RAILWAY 3

GUISELEY 5

A much changed Guiseley side travelled to fog bound Harrogate Railway last Wednesday night for the West Riding County Cup tie and the youngsters who came into the side impressed in a 5-3 win.

With Des Hazel still on international duty in St Kitts, Peter Atkinson, Simon Trevitt and Neil Parsley still injured and manager Bobby Davison having taken Colin Hunter for a trial with Scunthorpe Guiseley had to dig deep into their young reserve side for replacements but the lads came up trumps

Guiseley took a sixth minute lead with a strike from Julian

Wilkes. Harrogate levelled on 30 minutes but Guiseley regained the lead with an own goal.

Harrogate then forged into a 3-2 lead with strikes in the 62nd and 73rd minutes.

Guiseley levelled when 18 year-old substitute Richard Machell scored with his first kick.

Craig Bower put Guiseley ahead at 4-3 with an 88th minute goal following a Benn Gallagher corner and then another youngster out of the reserve side - Chris Jeng - sealed victory with a right foot shot in injury time.

This was an impressive display by a very young Guiseley side showing great promise.

l On Saturday Guiseley visit Winsford and then on Tuesday entertain Droylsden in the President's Cup (7.30 pm).

Jamie Proctor's international clearance has now come through and he will join the squad for Saturday.

RUNCORN RESERVES 4

GUISELEY RESERVES 5

MANAGER Brett Farriday held his hands up and took the blame for his Guiseley Reserve side going 3-0 down at Runcorn on Saturday.

The manager said:" I always say don't mend things that aren't broken and then I go do it myself. I changed the team round and played three central defenders but it did not work. Within 25 minutes we were 3-0 down.

We reverted to 4-4-2 and hit back to take the points with a good second-half performance in which the whole team shone.'

Trailing 3-0 Guiseley pulled a goal back before the break through Craigh Bower.

When the manager reverted to 4-4-2 after the interval Guiseley scored four goals to take a 5-3 lead but they then went to sleep in injury time and Runcorn pulled a goal back.

'We played some of our best football in the second-half and the lads saved my skin,' said Farriday.

Scorers were Craig Bower (2), Andy Carlton (2) and Julian Wilkes. Referee's Man-of-the-Match was Andy Carlton. Lee Poole played well in midfield as did Phil Atkinson, from the Academy side, who came on as a second-half substitute.

l On Saturday Guiseley Reserves entertain Horsforth St Margaret's in the Wharfedale FA Airedale International Challenge Cup quarter-finals (2.30 pm).

GUISELEY ACADEMY 3

EMLEY 2

GUISELEY's Under-19 Academy side rattled league leaders Emley by taking a three goal lead in the first-half of their Northern Youth Academy League game at Nethermoor on Thursday.

Although Emley hit back with two second-half goals Guiseley hung on to take the points and dent Emley's unbeaten record this season.

In the 36th minute Guiseley took the lead with a fine goal from Richard Machell. He worked his way in from the left touchline, beat his man and sat the 'keeper on his backside before slotting the ball home.

Guiseley's second goal came from debutant Matthew Glendinning who headed in when given a second chance after his good shot was beaten away.

Guiseley extended their lead when left-back James Elliott rammed the ball home in the 43rd minute after a good run by Brian Carr.

After their good play in the first-half, when they created numerous chances, it was a battle in the second-half but Guiseley hung on to take the points.

l Tonight, Thursday, the Academy are due to entertain Yorkshire Amateurs in the cup re-play at Nethermoor (7.30 pm).
