MOTORISTS will be prevented from parking along a busy main road by Otley Chevin in a series of safety improvements.

The popular spot at Caley Craggs, on the A660 Otley Road, is used by people to park and climb over a stepladder on to the Danefield Estate.

But vehicles stopping and pulling out on to the road, which has three carriageways, have caused concern among road safety campaigners for some time.

Now Leeds City Council's highways department has prepared a scheme to put up safety barriers and high kerbs to stop parking on the road side.

A spokesman for the department said the plan would be submitted to the Highways Agency early in the New Year, and it was likely work would begin almost immediately.

Councillor Graham Kirkland has appealing for the improvements for more than two years.

He said he was delighted that persistent campaigning had finally paid off.

"This seems to conclude the saga of this very dangerous parking problem.

"It's excellent news but it should have been done some time ago," he said.

"I have seen families unloading their children right by three lanes of very fast-moving traffic and I'm amazed there has never been a fatal accident because of it."

Coun Kirkland said he would be checking to make sure the kerb was very high and also that it ran the entire length of the stretch at Caley Craggs.
