Amateur Rugby League: The bombs were flying at Hill Top where Division Five team Queensbury A pulled off a big upset to dump favourites Park Amateurs A out of the Pennine Shipley Trophy.

Division One pacesetters Park were the first to score before Queensbury prop forward Shaun Fallon found Neil Hobson with an inside pass for the centre to cross at the posts. Fallon added the conversion.

The first Queensbury 'bomb' badly misfired when the high kick was collected by the visitors wingman who raced 80 metres to score a converted try.

Queensbury were not deterred, however, and when stand off Andy Thornton hoisted a second 'bomb' it landed on top of the upright, bamboozling the defence.

Full back Andrew Barraclough outjumped everyone to collect and score a try which was again converted by Fallon to give them a 12-10 victory.

Clayton had a comfortable passage into the fourth round of the President's Cup with a 24-0 home win against Littleborough.

The Villagers' hardest task was coping with two freak snow showers, which nearly caused the match to be abandoned.

Clayton took the first half spoils 8-0 thanks to tries from centre Chris Parr and wingman Jeremy Robertshaw.

The highlight of the second half was a 40 metre special from centre Paul Cornforth followed by another touchdown from substitute Adam Mitchell.

Parr again showed his class with a further try and two goals. Clayton's promising second row forward Mark Schofield took the eye with a powerhouse display in the pack.

Queensbury moved joint top of the Pennine Premier Division with a 24-16 victory at Sowerby Bridge Robins, but they had a real fright when they found themselves trailing 16-0 on the half hour.

Centre Mark Gay put them back in contention against the basement side with a try converted by Martin Potts just before the interval and with the slope in their favour Queensbury took control of the second half.

Wingman Darren Brown claimed two tries against his former club and second row forward Gary Prentice chipped two. Steven Gallagher converted one of them to keep their title challenge well on course.

Queensbury's half back pair of Carl Smith and Gareth McKinley was outstanding.

Birkenshaw gave Division One leaders Calder Valley a torrid first half before they were overcome 32-14.

The highlight was a 40 metre run from forward Andy Redmond who took on all comers to crash over the line. Phil Smith added the conversion and kicked two penalties to put Birkenshaw just 14-10 behind at the break.

It was all Calder Valley in the second half, but Man of the Match Jason Brooksbank scored a late consolation try for Birkenshaw.

Wyke played a lot better than the 45-16 scoreline suggests on their visit to high-flying Division Two side Hillsborough Hawks.

Chris Scott scored a fine try when he fooled the home defence on the last tackle and Paul Metcalfe was good value for his two touchdowns. Full back Darren Barraclough was Wyke's best player.

In Division Three West Bowling A crashed to a 37-10 defeat at home to promotion chasing Todmorden.

It was all too much for Bowling full back Sha Basha who left the field with ten minutes still to play with his team trailing by 30-2. His team- mates responded by scoring two late tries through Paul Ali and Chris Makowski.

Division Four side Victoria Rangers were well worth the 8-8 draw at Slaithwaite Saracens thanks to two-drop goals from scrum half Jason Pounder.

Although the Vics were always behind they showed great character and scored the best try of the match when John Belcher collected a high kick to score under the posts allowing Gary Mitchell an easy conversion.

Clayton A moved off bottom spot with a 28-15 win at Keighley Celtic. Forwards Steve Flanagan and Dave Williams provided the platform for tries for Alan Dodsley, Kevin Flanagan, Johnny Alderson, Anthony Brannan and a 50 metre special from Andy Barnes who also dropped a goal.

Assistant coach Mick Atkinson was man of the match kicking three goals and a drop goal.

Shipley looked to be under pressure in their Division Five match against Sowerby Bridge Robins A when they trailed 18-6 at half time with a solitary try from Guy Dunn converted by Steve Ellison. They rallied in the second half with tries to Mark Smith and Mick Carnelly (2) plus a further two conversions from Ellison to take the spoils 22-18.
