A couple's naked cuddle only yards from a police station landed them before Bradford magistrates today.

Michael Hutchinson and Nancy Preston didn't have a stitch on as they lay on the ground in Centenary Square one night in chilly February.

Police saw what was going on and ordered them to cover up, but Hutchinson replied: "Why?''

Police asked them again to stop what they were doing, and pulled them apart, said prosecutor Jane Farrar.

"There were other people passing through - they were standing and watching what was happening. There were also women and children in the vicinity.''

Hutchinson, 39, of Chain Street, Bradford, and Preston, 49, of Horton Grange Road, Bradford, pleaded guilty to outraging public decency. They were conditionally discharged for a year and ordered to pay £30 costs each.

Philip Ainge, mitigating, said they were both very sorry about their activities on that day.

He added: "They do accept that their behaviour may have upset some people. Certainly a number of people regarded the incident as a rich source of amusement.

"Both parties had been drinking and I'm afraid having had something to drink, in Centenary Square they allowed their emotions to get the better of them.''
