Protest meetings are being organised in Bradford following a shooting in the Pakistani city of Mirpur.

The death of 24-year-old Shahid Mohammed has provoked anger among family members in Bradford who claim the police are doing nothing to catch his killers.

Mr Mohammed's cousin, Farida Faizi, of Durham Road, Girlington, said: "We want to do something to get the police to act. They haven't even written a report about it and it happened more than two weeks ago."

She said her uncle, who runs a money exchange and goldsmith business in Mirpur, was returning home after work when he was approached by four armed men outside his house demanding money.

"He gave them about £80,000 but my cousin came out of his house to see what the noise was about and they shot him point blank, killing him instantly.

"They also shot my uncle four times but he survived, although he is in hospital. The police station is a few yards away and they were called but someone eventually had to go down and ask them to come and investigate."

She said the death had shocked residents in Mirpur and in Bradford.

"There is a big community from Mirpur living in Bradford. Nothing like this has every happened in Mirpur - it's stunned the whole community there and here. We want to organise some sort of protest here to get the police to catch the people who did this to my cousin."

Some members of the family flew over to Mirpur as soon as they heard about the shooting on February 17.

Insp Martin Baines, Bradford community and race relations officer, who has just returned from Mirpur as part of a week-long Bradford delegation led by Bradford Lord Mayor Councillor Tony Miller, said he had been unaware of Mr Mohammed's murder and had not raised the matter during his meetings with local police.

A meeting to discuss the protest campaign will be held on Sunday at 22, Farcliffe Place, Manningham, starting at 4pm.
