A furniture warehouse with a difference opens this weekend in Bradford, aimed at helping low-income families.

Christians Against Poverty, a charity which has been working for more than two years to help Bradford people in debt, has launched CAP Trading.

And it is calling upon the generosity of local people to help make the project a success.

Director John Kirkby said there were already plenty of charity clothes shops but often it was basic items like fridges, beds and chairs which poor people lacked.

So they have set up a store at Unit 1, Midland Road, near Valley Parade, and will open their doors on Saturday.

John said: "After a month of hard work we now have our premises and are ready to start.

"We need good-quality household furniture and electrical appliances for us to recondition and distribute to Bradford's poor.

"All goods will be made available at affordable prices and anyone on income support or who is unemployed will be able to get goods at half price. All funds will be used to run the factory and 100 per cent of the excess will be used to support the charity's debt counselling and crisis management work."

He said poverty-stricken families in crisis would be given items free of charge.

CAP Trading has already been donated 5,000 square meters of grey, foam-backed carpet from P&O Exhibition Services, part of the ferry company. CAP Trading will be selling it at £1 a square metre to all-comers this weekend.

The PRS Group, of Cutler Heights Lane, Bradford, has supplied a big sign at a low cost to help out.

Anyone able to give good quality second-hand items like washing machines, fridges, and sofas is asked to phone Ken Smith on (01274) 776856.
