A Bradford charity which has rescued the relationships of hundreds of couples could fold unless it raises at least £10,000 before the end of the month.

Bradford Relate, in Westgate, which celebrated its 50th anniversary last year, faces closure because of a spiralling cash crisis.

The organisation, which helps couples from all backgrounds and all ages to overcome problems when their relationships come under strain, is asking for cash from the community.

It is also lobbying Bradford Health Authority for funds towards coping with the nearly 1,000 inquiries it handles each year. A third of the cases are referrals from GPs.

Bradford Relate has a team of 25 trained counsellors and six administrative staff. All will lose their jobs if the charity closes.

Co-manager Gill Crofts said: "Our team plays an important role in the city and has helped hundreds of couples each year. The demand for our work is still very high.

"Without us a big void will be left behind."

She said the organisation was working on a long-term financial solution but needed short-term help now. "We cannot afford to be limping about on scarce funds."

The charity, which helps people with little money, has revealed it is £10,000 in the red.

A plan of action includes teaming up with Keighley Relate and continuing to press Bradford Health Authority for cash.

Miss Crofts said it had been lobbying the authority since January.

She said the charity was appealing to people it had aided in the past to help them out.

Anyone who can help should call Bradford Relate on (01274) 726096. Donations can be sent to their office on the First Floor, 46 Westgate, Bradford, BD1 2QR.
