Non-League Soccer: Another night of missed chances cost Avenue dear as two second half strikes were enough for Ossett Albion to clinch the West Riding County Cup 2-0 at Woodlesford.

Despite dominating the first half and having the added bonus of being spurred on by three quarters of the sizeable crowd, the Bradford side failed to seize the initiative.

Albion's two set-piece goals came in a 13-minute spell early in the second half and, though Avenue continued to mount threatening attacks, they proved decisive.

Avenue had already created openings before Jason Maxwell got on the end of Stephen Ball's tenth minute cross only to shoot over from 12 yards. A mesmerising run by Chris Brandon minutes later ended with him flashing an angled shot just wide.

Albion's keeper John Hood played his part in the goalless first period with saves from Ian Briggs, a testing Ball cross under pressure from Maxwell and a 20-yard free kick from Wayne Benn.

Just five minutes into the second half centre back Neil Bagshaw conceded a free kick just outside Avenue's area. Chris Cornelly delivered the ball into the box and Albion skipper Shaun Joyce steered the ball in.

Just after the hour they made it 2-0 when Cornelly whipped in a corner. Albion defender Gavin Dooley made a run that created a distraction and the flag kick curled in past Avenue keeper Derek O'Connor.

Avenue still had chances to make a contest of it, most notably when Hood saved from Maxwell and Briggs fired over from a good position, but they could not rescue the game.

Farsley Celtic's trip to Trafford in the UniBond Division One, postponed from Tuesday because of a waterlogged pitch, is re-scheduled for tonight.

Celtic are without suspended striker Ian Blackstone and unavailable trio of Wayne Noteman, Paul Stevenson and Simon Woodhead as they seek the three points that will almost surely guarantee their UniBond status.
